Stanley Sheldon’s Rhythm Republic

CONCERT OVERVIEW

This Kansas City band BURNS! Stanley Sheldon’s Rhythm Republic brings the heat with Salsa, Afro-Cuban, Mambo, Cha Cha, Bolero and more, drawn from the jazz traditions of Cuba, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. Expect to hear music made famous by giants like Poncho Sanchez, Eddie Palmieri, Chucho Valdés and Tito Puente, woven together with originals from a group of musicians who bring decades of combined experience playing — and sharing — this vibrant music. It’s an afternoon of rhythm, fire and pure joy in the intimate setting of TPAC’s Festival Hall.

ABOUT STANLEY SHELDON

Bandleader and bassist Stanley Sheldon brings a remarkable musical journey to the Topeka Jazz stage. Best known to rock audiences as the bassist on Peter Frampton’s era-defining Frampton Comes Alive!, Sheldon has shared stages and studios with the likes of Tommy Bolin, Warren Zevon and Delbert McClinton over a career spanning five decades. But it’s Latin music that has become his deepest passion: he devoted much of the 1990s to Latin American studies at the University of Kansas, traveling widely through the region and immersing himself in the salsa, son and Afro-Cuban traditions that now drive Rhythm Republic. Fluent in Spanish and Portuguese and a dedicated teacher, Sheldon pours a lifetime of musical exploration into this fiery, joyful celebration of Latin jazz.
